01991 Mercury Capri Convertible Test Drive
Mercury’s Capri went full circle in the American market, in that it initially was imported, evolving for round two as a Mustang twin, and in it’s final interpretation, was again brought from over seas. In this version a Mazda 323 based unit from down under, that Ford sold as the Laser. Thought to mimic Mazda’s Miata, but in 2+2 , front drive form, this model really was not successful if sales are any indicator. In the video, the narrator notes the non power top operation was manageable by even the woman on the staff. Different times. Stylistically, also noted was how the look was “cute but clumsy”, perhaps a result, inherent of being front drive. Overall the car as a whole provided a unique alternative to a class revived by Mazda. Especially if the buyer “wants a Mustang GT convertible but doesn’t want to fill the tank”!
