01990: Shelby Twin-Turbo Terror Truck
In the early 1990’s, one automotive market niche to open up seemed that of the ultra-performance pickup. First it was the Chevrolet 454SS; however, that seemed mild compared to the turbocharged V-6 all-wheel-drive GMC Syclone. But what could have been the most outrageous of all was the Shelby truck prototype pictured here. Ol’ Shel’s group of hot-roddders stuffed yet another big engine into a small compartment-namely, a twin-turbo 318 V-8 in between the frame rails of a Shelby Dakota. The engine featured twin water to air intercoolers and enough boost to twist the dyno past 400 horsepower. Shelby was confident he could emissionize the package and sell it for somewhere in the neighborhood of $35,000.
