In Australia, the Legacy was called the Liberty, as there was an issue with a Japanese company using the name of our returned servicemen’s assistance association as the name of a vehicle. Here is the 1990 Liberty commercial:
This was when (in my opinion) Subaru began to build a better car. The interior of Legacy was more organized, including the HVAC/climate controls. The Legacy would quickly outsell its smaller counterpart, the Loyale (for example). Loyale had a part-time 4-wheel drive system, as did earlier models. Legacy and later models would have full-time all-wheel drive. That is, if so equipped.
