1990 Volkswagen Corrado G60 Test Drive

Everybody talked about the Corrado, it seemed, but not many people wanted it. That was a problem for Volkswagen, which had high hopes for its new sports coupe. The problem was the strong opposition the Corrado faced from a new crop of high performance coupes from Japan. Many delivered more performance at a lower price and would thus appeared to be better bargains. When all was said and done, it was an attractive package that deserved a second look.
Start with the body, a handsome if somewhat bulky shape that combined low drag and distinctive appearance. Smooth and sculpted, it was Volkswagen in character. Only one novelty feature, a rear deck spoiler that automatically raised at speeds above 45 mph.
Then look at the engine, a novelty in itself. Though based on the 8-valve inline-4 so familiar to
drivers of everything from Foxes to Golfs, Corrado got a supercharger to raise the 1.8-liter power-plant’s output to 158-bhp. Because of the blower impeller’s unique spiral shape, VW called this device a G-lader. Peak power cam at high speed in this case 5600 rpm.
