Alfa’s 164 shared its basic platform with Saab, Lancia, and Fiat in an international design series called Type 4. All of them were good cars; Alfa’s version perhaps the best. With its smashing Pininfarina coachwork, aggressively raked stance, muscular V6, and cleverly crafted interior, the 164 offered American buyers an exciting alternative to Saab’s efficient but comparatively prosaic-looking 9000.
