1991 Ford Escort Test Drive

The all-new 1991 Ford Escort line was introduced in spring of 1990 and included two door hatchback, four-door hatchback, and station wagon models. Improved aerodynamics, increased interior room, and more efficient powerplants gave Escort increased appeal. Pony and LX models received a 1.9-liter four with electronic fuel injection and 88 horsepower. The top-line GT boasted a 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve engine producing 127 horsepower, plus new four wheel independent suspension with 15-inch wheels and four wheel disc brakes. All models used motorized passive-restraint seatbelts and could be ordered with Ford’s new electronically controlled four-speed automatic transaxle. The station wagon resembled a miniature Taurus and was a strong addition to the lineup.
