Although it was manufactured in the U.S., the car was largely designed by Mazda in Japan. this car shared its platform with the Mazda 323/Protégé.
Despite sharing the basic platform with the 323/Protégé, there was virtually no visual cues to the relationship. In front, the Escort more closely resembled its big brother, the Taurus.
The Escort was available in three basic bodystyles, a three door hatchback, a five-door hatchback and station wagon. there were also three trim levels, Pony, LX and GT. The three-door was available in any grim level, while the five-door and wagon would only be available in LX trim. there was a choice of the standard five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic at any level and bodystyle.
The Pony was the least expensive version, the the 1.9-liter engine. The LX trim level was a bit more luxurious. The same drivetrain remained, but more luxury and appearance items were added.
