1991 Hyundai Scoupe LS Test Drive
The Scoupe was the third vehicle offered by Hyundai, following the subcompact Excel and the mid-size Sonata. The Scoupe was a two door coupe, based on the same platform as the Excel. The Excel itself received a thorough revision for the 1990 model year. In addition to new interior and exterior styling, which gave the Excel a fresh look for the 1990s, the new engine provided 20 percent more horsepower than the previous one. Surprisingly, fuel economy was up 20 percent too.
The Scoupe had unique styling so that it wouldn’t look much like its Excel brother. The exterior was modern in appearance, but not excessively sporty. Hyundai tried to appeal to buyers who would like a sporty car, such as the Toyota Celica or Honda Prelude, but don’t have the budget. Rather than buy the subcompact hatchback that most manufacturers offered in this price range, the Scoupe appeared a bit sportier and more youthful.
