Isuzu may have been a small company, but it still managed to put together one of the most aggressive product campaigns in the industry.
The all new 1991 Rodeo, as in cowboy, not the Beverly Hills showing mecca, was a 4-door, long-wheelbased, 2wd or 4wd platform, offered with either a 2.6-liter inline 4-cylinder or a 3.1-liter V6. Its ride was carlike, it looked upscale and its American-built (Lafayette, Indiana) fit and finish was second to none. Rodeo’s interior was roomy, comfortable and driver/passenger friendly, and the cargo hold would handle a 4X8-ft sheet of plywood. The 120-horsepower sohc 4-cylinder was surprisingly capable, but the torquier V6 was more pleasant to drive.
Though the Rodeo entered a field crowded with talent, its looks, quality and, best of all, pricing which started at $12,500, and capped at a fully loaded $18k and change including leather seats and hi-line stereo.
