31991 Isuzu Stylus Test Drive
The Stylus was Isuzu’s new entry into one of the most contested areas in all of automobiledom: the small sedan wars.
The Stylus had a sportier nature than your average 1991 little sedan. Even competing in Motor Trends 1991 Import Car of the Year contention, with many judges feeling it had a shot at rattling the Honda Civics cage, with its superior cornering and overall handling characteristics. With formidable NVH and general noisiness not unlike the Impulse RS, the significant detraction.
The Exterior demonstrated courageous brake away styling, in reference to the typical Japanese bland of the era.
I actually read in one of my older Car and Driver magazines that GM almost rebadged the Stylus as the Spectrum and they were going to sell it along side the Storm but it was axed at the last minute
that would have been interesting! I will have to research that myself! I always found the Stylus attractive!
I’m pretty sure that MW got the engine size wrong. The DOHC was 1.8L, while the base SOHC 12-valve, 95-horse unit was 1.6L.
