The early 90’s saw an emerging class of vehicles that buyers would seem they could not live with out, an urban 4wd station wagon. Much more prestigious to be seen in than the mommy stigma based minivan. GM’s discovery that it’s buyers would pay a premium for an upmarket trimmed truck or SUV was brilliant. The execution, arguably not nearly so. But, the profits obtained by not just SUV’s but ‘near luxury’ SUVs were high. Adventures in Badge Engineering! People may have been foolish to buy them, but GM and others were smart to produce them.
