1991 Plymouth Sundance America Test Drive

The perception that American small cars did not obtain good mileage may have been perceived by cars like this. Having recently piloted an extremely low mileage version of this car within the last year, i can confirm, this thing is tiny. I have been around them before, but no one on one until very recently, and like many cars, in photos they appeared larger than they actually are. Having prefaced that, consider the EPA mileage of 23/30. Decent, if adequate. What Chrysler used to differentiate, or up sell them, was safety. Not only was this the least expensive domestic car you could buy back then, it also was the cheapest car with an airbag. Something they advertised, on air, and print ubiquitously. Originally developed to replace the Omni/Horizon twins, they were never as ‘un’ contended as the ‘America’ version in this test, even offering a v6, and Turbo motivation. With mileage at 30, something much larger cars get now, and many got back then, perhaps the America badge on this subcompact was not worthy of touting, just yet!
