Built as a follow up to the the Samurai that was no longer available for sale after 1988 in the US market, the Sidekick was initially built as a two door convertible, or hard-top. The four door was introduced in 1991 as an entrant in the then, briskly emerging 4dr sport utility segment. Having a full, truck like body on frame design allowed the Sidekick to be taken further off road than a car based, unit body arrangement. Powerful? No. Quick? Heck no! Capable? I imagine so, based on the reasonably strong following these possess!
