01992 Cadillac Eldorado Test Drive
For its 25th season, Cadillacs personal luxury Coupe got a new body that more clearly differentiated it from the 4 door Seville. Both models retain the same basic front drive platform, but no longer shared wheel base or body panels.
Eldorado retained a 108-in wheelbase but its body grew longer overall by almost 11 in, wider by two and a half, and taller by almost an inch, though interior dimensions increased only fractionally. Trunk space was up a claimed 1.2 cubic feet, and base curb weight increased some 135 lb.
Like 1991, and in common with Seville, Eldorado was powered by Cadillacs 200 horsepower 4.9 liter V8. It again teamed with a 4 speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, which now would not shift from park if the brake pedal was not applied.
A driver side airbag, anti-lock brakes, and Cadillacs Computer Command Ride auto adjusting shock absorber system returned. Standard tires were wider on inch larger, 16 inch wheels, and a new sport interior option replaced a standard electronic instrumentation with the more complete analog of the STS.
The 1992 Eldorado was Cadillacs most potent premium coupe contender in years. It had a somewhat less nimble feel than most import rivals, but the $37,000 touring Coupe was nonetheless a genuine alternative to expensive overseas makes. While the Touring Coupe came closest to matching them in outright handling and road holding, the standard model also was far more rewarding to drive than its predecessor, and both versions were as opulent as most any Eldorado ever built.
