1992 GMC Sonoma GT Test Drive

GMC hoped to capitalize on the interest aroused by its Ferrari-beating pickup, the turbocharged four-wheel-drive Syclone, with a more affordable interpretation of the same concept, the Sonoma GT.
This rear-wheel-drive compact truck was powered by the new L35 version of GMC’s 4.3-liter v-6. It put out 195 bhp and 260 pounds feet of torque, and it had a gear driven balance shaft to take the sting out of the power. An automatic transmission was mandatory, but there’s enough power to get the Sonoma GT to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds.
Just like the Syclone, the downsize Sonoma GT was tricked up with a sport suspension, fat wheels and tires, and the usual suspects from the body kit department. It came only in black.
Although the execution was a little crude, this $16,300 truck was pretty refined to drive. The Sonoma GT also proved again that a good power-to-weight ratio and an affordable price make the Great American Pickup Truck one of the best driver’s cars on the road.
