1992 GMC Typhoon Test Drive

Typhoon blew into town, featuring Syclone powertrain wrapped in two-door Jimmy body. In the early 1990s, savvy enthusiasts could walk into a GMC dealership and purchase the world’s fastest production pickup in the form of the 1991 GMCSyclone, a high-performance GMC Sonoma. In 1992-93, the similarly powered GMC Typhoon SUV arrived, essentially a GMC Jimmy version of the Syclone recipe. “What you’ve got here is a hot rod, with the accompanying emphases on style and acceleration over utility,” Wilson wrote. The sport SUV was equipped with a turbocharged 4.3-liter V6 that churned out 280 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. With its AWD and a four-speed transmission, the Typhoon could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.
