Larger than Excel, smaller than Sonata, and looking a bit like both, down to Hyundai’s new “H in oval” logo, Elantra was billed as a ‘high-end’ subcompact aimed at Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, and Saturn SL. A front-drive 4-door in base and GLS form, it was powered by a new Hyundai-built 1.6-liter 16-valve twin-cam four. Horsepower was 113 with the standard 5-speed manual, 105 with the optional 4-speed automatic No airbag was offered; the base model started around $9,000.
