01992 Mercedes Benz 400SE Test Drive
Mercedes Benz replaced its big S-Class line, introduced in 1981, with new sedans whose cost ranged from around $66,000 to about $125,000. All rear-drive 4-door sedans, they again came in two basic sizes: SE (119.7-inch wheelbase, up four inches from before, and SEL (123.7 inches, up 2.6). The 300 SE/SEL used a new 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 24-valves and 231 horsepower. The 400SE/SEL used a 4.2-liter V-8 (286 horses), the 500SE/SEL, a 5.0 V-8 (326) and the new 600SE/SEL a 6.0 V-12 (408). The 300SD had a turbo diesel 3.5 six (150).
The new S-class was the first Mercedes with double-glazed side windows. The automaker said they improved weather and sound insulation and prevented misting. Driver’s and front passenger airbags were standard in a cabin with slightly more interior room than before. Five seats were standard; dual rear buckets were an option; all seat-backs reclined and could be optionally heated. Real wood trimmed the cockpit. Optional was a power assisted closing for doors and trunk.
