1992 Plymouth Sundance Duster Test Drive
The bratty Dodge Shadow ES Turbo and Plymouth Sundance were top econosport picks at Motor Trend for a couple years, but for 1992 things changed. The turbo engine was dropped in favor of a lower-priced V-6, and the Shadow ES was being honored jointly with the near identical Plymouth Sundance Duster V-6. Powered by the Mitsubishi built 3.0-liter SOHC six commonly found in most every Chrysler product from mini-vans to New Yorkers, the Duster delivered a solid dose of low-buck bang. With the standard five-speed, 0-60 mph happened in 8 seconds. Base price for the Sundance V-6 was $10,498. Significantly less than the similar performing Ford Escort GT. This front-drive econosport could hold five passengers or transport great gobs of groceries and gardening equipment via its roomy trunk and fold-down rear seats. Driver side airbag was standard, and four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes were optional.
