01992 Saturn SC Test Drive
After eight years and $8 Billion in start up costs, GM’s vaunted new Saturn sub-compacts debuted for 1991 .
Saturn, the General Motors subsidiary charged with taking on economy imports, added an optional driver side air bag as a running change to its 1992 models.
Interest was high with prices as low as $7995, but a deliberate “go-slow” policy held production to 48,629 in its first year. For this, its second model year, Saturn again offered 4-door notchback sedans in base SL trim and SL1 and SL2 guise, and the related 2-door Sports Coupe , simply called the SC. All got a new engine mounting system claimed to reduce vibration and harshness. There was also more sound insulation and, for SC and the sporty SL2 sedan, newly optional leather seat trim and bright-finish 15-inch alloy wheels.
