41992 Subaru SVX Manufacturer Promotional Video
Subaru has always been committed to producing cars that reflect its own highly individual and recognizable approach to engineering. The 1980’s XT coupe wasn’t really a success – from the brutal ‘big wedge of cheese’ styling to the turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive, the whole thing just failed to hang together. However, this failure didn’t put Subaru off from investing in another coupe as it would have done many other manufacturers. No, Subaru’s next attempt was to be even more complex and even more unusual than their first bash. The SVX would be described as a combination of the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and Jaguar XJS, as the SVX had the mechanical cleverness of the former and the refinement of the latter. The SVX was a remarkably refined and surefooted car to drive, delivering the level of comfort that made very long journeys swift, safe and enjoyable. There was, perhaps too much technology under too odd a skin, capped with too obscure a badge. It wasn’t a success, but the SVX was an excellent car anyway.
I wish Subaru would do cars like this again.
Not unlike many manufacturers, the SVX was manual transmission shoulda coulda woulda! Good looking car IMO, with exception to the bland front clip! Still, I would own one!
There’s still a glimmer of hope with the Subaru BR-Z. Hope Subaru finds it within themselves to offer niche-fillers (and niche-creators) again. Just don’t overdo it like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
if i am being honest, i find the styling of the BRZ (and its twin) a bit to anime’, or generic Japanese with its looks. Not that it is unattractive, just lacking inspiration. Cant wait to drive one however!
