The Astro didn’t win any awards for trendiness, but under its toolbox-like exterior was the heart of a highly capable family mover. Available in standard or extended-length wheelbase, the commodious Chevy could transport up to eight humans. Body-on-frame construction gave the Astro a heavier duty ride than that of its Lumina Minivan sibling, but also delivered greater paybacks in towing (up to 5500 pounds) and cargo carrying (up to 1900 pounds). Power came from the torquey 4.3-liter V-6 (165 or 200 horsepower) and your choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.
