Performance upgrades were added to the trendy del Sol, giving the front-drive pseudo convertible an extra dose of enthusiasm. The base 1.5-liter SOHC (102 horsepower) and uplevel 1.6-liter SOHC (125 horsepower) fours were now topped by a hi-pi 1.6 DOHC VTEC version, boasting 160 horses. This new VTEC model also brought larger front brakes, beefed-up suspension, and 195/60VFR14 rubber. Watch out, MX5 Miata. The rest of the del Sol line was unchanged (except for the addition of dual airbags) and returned with its removable aluminum roof section, retractable rear window, and good fuel economy.
