Sharing the same mechanical base with the Range Rover, the Defender opted for a totally different vocation. They were utility vehicles in the strictest sense of the word. Above all, they were the preferred means of transportation for professionals traveling through wild country.
The craze of all-purpose four-wheel-drive vehicles had boomed so much that Land Rover, which occupied a particular spot in a market gap, now wished to offer these vehicles to a wider audience. Land Rover had a world-wide reputation with a great many professionals for cross-country driving in particularly difficult terrain. The Defenders 90 was a three door station wagon.
The Defender 90 was an excellent tool for a gold prospector, but it was pretty expensive and too specialized for the ordinary person to throw him or herself into this adventure.
