31994 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 Test Drive
At first glance, revised styling was the most obvious change on the 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT. The body was smoothed out, vents to control air flow were modified and better integrated into the car’s flanks, and high power high tech headlights and fog lights were added. Overall the 3000GT looked less boy racer and more like the high speed GT car it was intended to be. Under the more refined skin were a host of performance upgrades. Twin turbocharged VR-4 models received a substantial power boost to 320 horsepower, a bump of 20, in hopes to compete better with the rival Turbo Supra. Inside, all 3000’s benefited with the addition of a passenger side airbag, ergonomic improvements to clean up a bit of the cluttered dash and center console, and the top models now came with an even further upgraded sound system with more power more speakers, a separate amp, anti theft feature and prewiring for a trunk mounted CD player. As always the car remained a near twin to the Dodge Stealth, Dodge however kept prices lower for a bit more value. In addition, there was a lower line version of the Stealth with a more meager engine to provide the styling thrills without the pep or price of the base Mitsubishi.
I wanted one of these cars SO badly! They were WAY ahead of their time. Look where Mitsu is now in the U.S.? NO WHERE!
I always liked the way a Stealth looked better, but I am glad I never actually purchased one. Known to be very difficult and expensive to repair. 300hp isn’t that much now, but still enough to make it pretty damn fast.
Yeah, slow.. today’s infinity g37 and Nissan 370zx can’t keep up with my stock vr4
