Though the 9000’s basic platform was originally co-designed with the Alfa 164, ther was little else these roomy front-wheel-drive Euro sport/luxury sedans shared. Saab’s flagship was offered in CS, CSE, CD, CDE, and Aero trim levels, with a base 2.3-liter four (150 horsepower) or turbo version (200 horsepower) for all but the topline Aero; it blistered the byways with even more boost, and 225 horsepower, big numbers from an engine the same size as what’s in a Ford Tempo. Dual airbags were new for 1994, but most everything else continued unchanged. The Aero produced big scoot (0-60mpg in 7.4 sec.) and exemplary road manners.
