71994 Saturn Homecoming Event
As a former Saturn car owner, three cars to be exact, it’s hard to describe the connection between the retailer, the manufacturer, the buying experience, and the cars themselves. Despite the initial cars being adequate at best, the comradery between any individual, be them an owner, the friendly polo and khaki wearing sales team, and the service team was obvious. The Saturn way was ground breaking, if for a small car line. Royalty was how you were treated, from the moment you set foot on the lot as a potential buyer, to the rare occasion that you had to bring your car in for service, at all times you were number one. And activities like the initial 1994 Saturn Homecoming proved it. The homecoming events provided consumbers an opportunity to traverse to where the cars were manufactured. A place where everyone that attended had a connection. June, 1994: 44,000 Saturn owners and their families attend the Saturn Homecoming in Spring Hill. Throughout this weekend and summer, Saturn retailers also held regional Homecoming events attracting over 130,000 customers. In all, 1 of every 6 Saturn customers participated in the Homecoming. It’s hard to believe this innovative car company is no longer. It’s hard to believe that, even the concept of how these small cars were retailed is no longer. That if anything was what made a Saturn a Saturn.
I’ve had 2 Saturns myself. A 96 SL2 that had some crazy transmission valvebody problem which made me sell it, and a 94 SL1 with the 85 hp TBI engine. I didn’t have that one very long. All I can really remember about it was that was it noisy, rather slow and didn’t get any better fuel mileage than my 93 2.5 Dodge Spirit. I was kinda surprised and impressed when I discovered the reverse gear rev limiter though.
I bought a ’94 Homecoming car used in August 1997. It served me well for three years and 90,000+ miles. I attended a local Saturn club meeting shortly after I bought it, and everyone was excited that I had a Homecoming car – several people insisted on going outside to look at it, LOL.
Thank you Baja! I missed seeing this!
