01995 Toyota Avalon Test Drive
A new flagship model joined Toyota’s lineup for 1995. With a passel of standard luxury features, plus a front bench seat to allow six-passenger cartage, the Avalon was marketed as the roomiest, most-sophisticated, and best-equipped sedan ever offered by the Toyota Division. Designed atop a stretched Camry platform, the Avalon was classified as a “Large” car by EPA standards, though its overall length was nearly a foot shorter than the Dodge Intrepid, which delivered a similar interior size. All Avalons were built in Kentucky and included dual airbags; ABS was optional. Two trim levels were offered (XL and top-line XLS), but both used the Camry-based 3.0-liter/192-horsepower V-6.
