01995 Volkswagen Cabrio Test Drive
This car was big news for Volkswagen. It was the automaker’s first all-new ragtop in more than 15 years, and delivered 20 percent greater structural rigidity, 11 percent more interior room, and 33 percent additional cargo space over its predecessor. Covered by a manually operated six-layer top, the fun-in-the-sun Cabrio retained its integral roll bar and coed-pleasing image. Dual airbags, ABS, power windows/locks, and an anti-theft system were standard. The only engine offered was a 2.0-liter 115-horsepower SOHC four, so you were better off cruising the beach than looking for adversaries. Would-be street-fighters would prefer the VW GTI-VR6 instead.
