01996 Audi A4 Test Drive
Audi’s all-new A4 entry-level model competed with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW’s 3-Series. Audi’s intent was to design a more expressive car than was its tradition, and the result was a wide stance and wedge profile. Audi heritage showed in the 2.8-liter/172-horsepower V-6 driving the front wheels or all four wheels in the Quattro option. Shortly after introduction, Audi began offering the A4 Quattro with an automatic transmission, in this case a new five-speed unit programmed with 200 different shifting strategies. A new multilink front suspension replaced MacPherson struts. Audi had big plans, and made big claims, for the A4. To compete against Mercedes-Benz and BMW, it had to be excellent.
