The last of General Motors’ big rear-drive cars rolled off the assembly line last week. The funeral industry was among those who mourned the loss.
The Cadillac Fleetwood, a car that dominated the hearse business, was among the heavy cars built at GM’s Arlington, Texas, plant. GM is converting it for production of big pickups and sport utility vehicles.The others are the Impala SS, a high-performance model that has its own fan club; the Chevrolet Caprice, once a best-seller and still popular with police departments and cab companies; and the Buick Roadmaster, the stereotypical “land yacht.”
The final car built at Arlington was an arctic white Caprice, said Jeff Kuhlman, spokesman for the GM Truck Group….
