With many well-heeled buyers wooed away from luxury sedans by opulently appointed Sport/utilities, it was no shock that many of the prestige nameplates were eager to add luxo-utes to their lineups. Mechanically a close relative of the Toyota Land Cruiser, this new Lexus entry was called the LX450. With ‘fresh’ Lexus-styled sheetmetal and interior appointments reminiscent of the LS400 sedan, the LX450 went head to head with the Range Rover. Power came from a variation of the 4.5-liter DOHC inline-six that drove the Land Cruiser. That meant a minimum of 212 horsepower, fed through an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
