The Nissan Pathfinder celebrated its 10th birthday with a complete redesign. In addition to a more sophisticated and sleeker look, the 1996 Nissan Pathfinder was longer, wider and featured an all new and more powerful standard V6 engine.
Also new for 1996 are standard dual airbags and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes. Rid and handling saw significant improvement, thanks to a revised strut type front suspension and the all-new unibody construction. Nissan claimed the new integral body and frame were two to three times stiffer than the previous body-on-frame platform, which was the traditional way trucks were built.
Positioned toward the upper end of the compact SUV market, the Pathfinder was designed to appeal to drivers who wanted rugged off-road performance, but who also wanted it in a sophisticated package. major competitors included the Honda Passport, Isuzu Rodeo, and Toyota 4Runner.
