With boxer engines, hill-holder clutches, available all-wheel-drive, and even a right-hand-drive model for rural postal carriers, the Subaru Legacy was more eccentric than typical Japanese family cars. The big news for 1996 was a new optional 2.5-liter/055-horsepower 16-valve, all-aluminum DOHC version of the familiar SOHC flat-four. The new engine inspired the 2.5GT all-wheel-drive sport model, which joined the base L, LS, and LSi along the Legacy spectrum. Returning were the Legacy Outback (featuring additional ground clearance and more aggressive, off-road-style appearance) and the refined Brighton wagons. The Legacy was the best-selling import waon in the United States in 1995.
