At long last, the aluminum uber sedan made it to the United States. Much of the rest of the world had an opportunity to sample the A8, but we American drivers were only just gettin our chance. And it was quite a piece of engineering. Audi’s ultimate sport-luxury sedan had an aluminum-alloy spaceframe, four side airbags, a five-speed automatic transmission, and healthy V-8 power. Two engines were available; a 3.7-liter/230-horsepower V-8 coupled with front drive, and a 4.2-liter/300-horsepower V-8 that clawed at the autobahn through Quattro all-wheel-drive. Both versions were plenty luxurious, but only the 4.2-liter came standard with a Bose high-end audio system.
