01997 Chevrolet Corvette C5 Test Drive
Yes, it was a long wait, but the C5 (fifth generation) Corvette was finally in the showroom by the end of 1996. With a longer wheelbase, a radically more rigid chassis, and a new optional real-time variable damping system, handling was at a new high. Under the hood was a totally new all-aluminum 5.7 liter pushrod V-8 engine, that like most GM small block efforts found its way throughout many other of the Generals lineups. It was a clean slate effort that shared nothing with the engine in the C4. Peak power had jumped to 345, backed up by a just as fantastic torque curve for the day.
