01997 Ford Thunderbird Test Drive
Ford’s long-running rear-drive Thunderbird returned for 1997 with an improved overdrive transmission and standard four-wheel disc brakes. A revised instrument cluster included a new array of warning lights, and the voltmeter and oil-pressure gauges were deleted. A new center console featured dual easy-access cupholders, and passenger-side footwell courtesy lights were standard. Powertrains carried over, with a 3.8-liter/145-horsepower V-6 as the base engine and a 4.6-liter/205-horsepower SOHC V-8 as the upgrade. With its fine rear-drive handling and decent interior space, the Thunderbird was an interesting alternative to common family sedans.
