1997 GMC Sonoma ZQ8 Test Drive

Steady improvement was the operative phrase when it came to GMC’s compact Sonoma pickup. Improvements to the frame in rear-drive models increased stiffness and improved the ride. The base four-cylinder engine and optional automatic transmission were better, too. A lighter plug-in front half shaft design benefited four-wheel-drive Sonomas. Typical of domestic pickups, the Sonoma was available in a dizzying array of cab and cargo-bed styles. An economical 2.2-liter/118-horsepower inline four was the base offering, with a pair of 4.3-liter V-6s that made between 175 and 190 horsepower (depending on state of tune and drivetrain type) available as options.
