Hyundai was expanding its lineup for 1997 with the addition of an all-new sporty hatchback. Riding on the same platform as the revamped Elantra, the new model was called Tiburon. Styling was influenced by Hyundai’s HCD-II concept car, a hit on the show circuit. Aggressive Fender blisters, a low, sloping hoodline and oversized, elliptical projector headlights set the Tiburon apart from Hyundai’s normally conservative lineup. There were enough folds and bends in the sheet metal to attract attention. But all the style was built in. There was no cladding, fake scoops or other gadgets that gave some cars in the segment that tacked-on look.
