Pontiac’s Sunfire came in three basic flavors: coupe, sedan, and convertible. That let this affordable small car serve duty in a lot of roles, from serious to sassy. Essentially carryover for 1997, the Sunfire coupe and sedan came standard in base-level SE trim, which included ABS, a fair complement of convenience items, and a 2.2-liter/120-horsepower inline-four. A three -speed automatic was standard on the convertible. The GT coupe got a 2.4-liter/150-horsepower four that dropped 0-60 times into the sub-eight second bracket. The big engine was optional in the rest of the fleet. The optional four-speed automatic transmission came paired with the enhanced Traction System.
