21997 Saturn SC2 Test Drive
1997 was the year of the Coupe at Saturn. While the sedan and wagon only received a few changes for 97′, the coupe was dramatically different. Now it rode on the same wheelbase and underbody as the sedan and wagon, to the benefit of interior space. Its curvaceous new body afforded more headroom and true to Saturn practice, its vertical panels were made of rugged polymer. The coupe came in two different trim levels. Base versions (SC1) were powered by a 1.9 liter 100-horse four, while the uplevel SC2 had a DOHC variant that pushed output to 124 horsepower.
Ahh, those days before GM ruined the Saturn brand.
I think the Saturn brand was doomed from the beginning. The concept wasn’t sustainable unless they had exclusive products and sales didn’t stay high enough to have exclusive, competitive products and be profitable.
