21997 Subaru Forester Test Drive
Although blasphemy to off road purists, its indisputable that the SUV became the station wagon of the 90s. Had you looked around then, the view would be Ford Explorers and Chevy Tahoe’s standing above the automotive sea with startling frequency. This mega trend spawned a sub genre often referred to as sport/cutes, a legion of car based SUV’s designed to address more directly the need of typical recreation minded buyers and what car company marketers referred to as soccer moms. Owing a debt of gratitude to the Toyota RAV4, which jump started this craze by combining cartoony looks with car based mechanicals. With a long history of producing AWD cars, Subaru had a wealth of know-how and componentry available to dedicate to the Forester.
I remember the original Subaru Forester. I find it more attractive than anything Subaru produces today. I’ve never driven one myself, so I couldn’t say what it’s like to drive.
