1998 Ford Contour SVT Test Drive

Looking for practical utility in a handsome, affordable sedan? You weren’t alone. Ford’s high-value offering was the Contour, a design effort that had a more satisfying feel from behind the wheel than many of its peers. Able to accommodate four adults in comfort (put the tall ones upfront), the Contour boasted a 13.9-cubic foot trunk to hold your gear. The basic powerplan was a 2.0-liter/125-horsepower inline four; from there, the upgrade was a smooth 2.2-liter/170-horsepower v6. The Contour SVT also packed a high-output version of the same engine that put 195-horsepower at your command. A long list of chassis upgrades matched the SVT’s extra power with enhanced performance.
