11998 Lincoln Navigator Test Drive
What weighed twice as much as a Mercury Tracer, had twice its horsepower, accelerated just about as fat, and got half the mileage? The all new Lincoln Navigator, the original full size domestic luxury SUV. Wanting a bigger and more ostentatious vehicle but unwilling to create an all new design, Ford added more chrome and a new nameplate to the Expedition to produce the Lincoln Navigator. The big, bright grille was the most obvious added ornamentation. Even thought the Navigator was the mechanical twin of the Expedition, it lugged around 400 more pounds of luxury equipment. With 4-wheel drive as an option, the Navvy came in only one trim level. It was powered by the 5.4 liter V-8, the optional engine on the Ford.
