Wearing new sheet metal that echoed the Millenia, a new 626 sedan arrived for 1998. Already sporting one of the largest interiors in its class, the new 626’s inner sanctum grew further still to a generous 97.1 cubic feet, and a trunk volume inflated to 14.2 cubic feet. The new unibody gained 43-percent greater torsional rigidity, a boon to ride, handling and noise control. The basic power plant was an evolutionary 2.0-liter/125-horsepower inline four The move-up was an impeccably mannered 170-horsepower V-6 that could be coupled with either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. Four models composed the 626 line: DX, LX, LX V-6, adn ES.
