01998 Mazda MPV Test Drive
Now that Toyota’s Previa and the Ford Aerostar disappeared, Mazda’s MPV remained the only rear-drive minivan in production, with the exception of the larger Astro/Safari from Chevrolet and GMC. For added grip, full-time all-wheel drive was offered as an upgrade. Another distinction for the MPV was its swing-out side doors, in place of the ubiquitous sliding doors of competing minivans. With the right equipment, the MPV could be outfitted to carry up to eight passengers in a relatively compact interior. Just one powertrain was offered, a 3.0-liter/155-horsepower V-6 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.
