01998 Mercedes Benz ML320 Test Drive
With passenger-car sales skyrocketing, Mercedes-Benz was in the midst of a powerful winning streak. That streak promised to extend into the sport-utility field with the introduction of the new M-Class. Built in a new factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the M-class’ enticing mid $30K, pricing and solid feature content would serve it very well. For 1998, this five passenger luxury-ute was powered by a 3.2-liter/215-horsepower V-6 coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission, and full-time two-range four wheel drive. A V-8 would arrive in 1999. Standard equipment included traction control, ABS, fully independent suspension, front-seat side airbags, and a hearty helping of convenience items.
