01999 BMW Z3 2.3 Test Drive
Good news for the few grumblers underwhelmed by the 1.9-liter inline-four that used to be the standard powerplant in Bmw’s Z3: For 1999, it was replaced with a 2.5*liter/170-horsepower DOHC inline six. Should you want more, 2.8-liter (193 hp) and 3.2-liter (240 hp) inline-six engines awaited your perusal. Two-seat coupe versions arrived in force for 1999, with power provided by either of the larger engines. No surprise, most enthusiasts were partial to the line-tipping M coupe and M roadster, with their 240-horsepower engines, plus suspension, tire, wheel, brake and interior enhancements. The 5.1-second 0-60-mph acceleration and telepathic handling it afforded made both versions the stuff of sports car legend.
