Considering the hassle that went with being a living legends, why did Carroll Shelby put his name on a supercharged Dodge Durango SP 360? Because he practically invented the idea of high performance Dodge trucks. 10 years prior he shoehorned a V8 into Dodge Dakota wasn’t a popular idea at Chrysler. After all who needed more than 3.9 liters of V6? But in the mind and offices of Carroll Shelby, such an engine swap was crucial twist to establishing the Dakota’s performance credentials. So was born in the 1989 Shelby Dakota, whose175 horsepower, 5.2 liter V8 made it the first production compact truck with eight cylinders propelling it. Only 1500 for ever made and 2 years later Dodge was cramming 5.2’s into Dakota’s on its own assembly lines.
