Mercedes-Benz put the pressure on its smallest sedan, the C-Class, for 1999. The previous base-level 2.3-liter DOHC inline-four engine was replaced with the related supercharged 2.3-liter engine from the SLK roadster, netting a welcome increase in horsepower from 148 to 185. Leather seating surfaces were now standard in all C-Class sedans (with full leather as an option), and the optional sport package was available on both the C230 Kompressor and the C280, with its 2.8-liter/194-horsepower SOHC V-6. Craving more performance? Mercedes-Benz offered a limited-production AMG-modified C43 with a 4.3-liter/302-horsepower SOHC V-8 throbbing under the hood.
